Installing Microsoft Exchange Email Client

This is an old procedure. Please see the instructions for setting up Outlook 2000 in the Set up manual.

Changing your Microsoft Exchange/Networking Password

NOTE: This document is a straight walk-through of setting up a new user.

Before you start:

Be sure you are logged on to the Microsoft Network (you should see all the NT servers in the Network Neighborhood, including SmathersNT2). If not, restart the computer and log in to Microsoft Networking with smatherslib as the domain.

Be sure you (or your user) has an account on the SmathersNT2 mail server. If not (or not sure) call Systems.

Installation:

To install the Microsoft Exchange mail client, do the following
In the Network Neighborhood folder, open SmathersNT2 folder.
Open Win95Xch folder.
Double click to run the Setup program. The only two values you'll have to fill in are MSE Server (SmathersNT2) and your userid (the same userid used to log on to Microsoft Networking).
To install the Microsoft OUTLOOK98 mail client, do the following

\\Libpreservent\office\Software\Microsoft

Follow this path in the Network Neighborhood:
Run SR1off97.exe (Office Patch required before installing Outlook98).
Run Office 98 Setup.exe to install Outlook98.

Checking your configuration:

To be sure that your configuration is correct :
Open the Inbox icon
Select Services on the Tools menu
You should see three services listed:
Microsoft Exchange Server
Personal Address Book
Personal Folders (optional use)
Select "Microsoft Exchange Server" and press Properties. You should see "SMATHERSNT2" and your name. Both should be underlined! If they aren't something is wrong, and you need to change them.
Return to previous screen, and with Microsoft Exchange Client still selected, press Remove then press "Add..." and add a new MSE client. Fill in the correct values.
If you see Internet Mail on the Services listed, select it and press Remove
If you are upgrading (ie, you had an earlier version of the MSExchange Client that worked) be sure that you delete the Internet Mail service.
Open the MSE Client (ie, the "Inbox")
Select "Services" on the Tools menu
If you see "Internet Mail" listed, select it and press "Remove" button.

IMPORTANT:

Look at the Microsoft Exchange Server Properties. There is a tab labelled "Advanced", and you should be sure that the box next to "Use network security during logon" is UNCHECKED or set to NONE (check the MSE properties in ALL profiles if more than one is set up).

NOTE: The above operations can be done with the Inbox client closed on the Control Panel named "Mail" This is also the place where you can set up additional profiles if more than one person use the same machine for email.

Testing:

When you have installed the Microsoft Exchange client 5.0, be sure to test it thoroughly before forwarding any mail. Do this:

Tell the recipient you are testing your mail, ask them to respond.

Tell the recipient you are testing your mail, ask them to respond.

Open the MSE client. SEND some mail to another address on the new mail server, eg: suzshaw@mail.uflib.ufl.edu
SEND some mail to someone on another mail system, eg: suzshaw@nervm.nerdc.ufl.edu
Reply to it, and be sure your reply is received.

Changing your password:

From the Start button, go to Settings, then Control Panel
Open the Passwords icon (set of keys)
Select Other Passwords and then select Microsoft Networking and press Change.
Type your old password and then your new password TWICE very carefully. Choose a password at least 12 characters long that includes letters and numbers and no real words.
If your Microsoft password is synchronized with your Windows password, you should change your Windows password at this point (also done from the Passwords icon in the Control Panel). If you make your new Windows password the same as your new Microsoft Networking password, you will avoid one extra log in window when you start your computer.
