Public Services Steering Committee
January

Minutes
Present: Carol Turner, Jan Swanbeck,
Carol Drum, Rich Bennett, David Hickey, Gary Cornwell
1) PS Web Page
Carol Turner said that she and Cynthia Bowker
have been working on the Public Services web page. The objective is to provide
useful information to the staff. She is still adding information to it and
discussed where certain things will be located, i.e.: minutes of PSC and PSSC
meetings will be part of the “Committees” link. She asked if
anyone had ideas of what else should be included on the page.
Several committee members offered suggestions,
such as committee reports, the public service mission and vision statements,
printable library handouts, information on distance learning, etc. Carol
said a link to the distance learning and outreach page will be added.
Cynthia and David Hickey will look into linking
the Circ. Manual to the page so staff members can easily access it. They
will also see if hyperlinks can be added to the Table of Contents to allow
staff members to easily “jump” to specific sections of the manual.
Carol asked that any other suggestions be sent
to her.

2) Goals and Objectives
A discussion about the public service goals
and objectives was held. Any updates, deletions or changed should be sent
to Carol.
Goals
One item discussed involved developing more
pathfinders and subject guides. Jan Swanbeck said that if the library decides
to subscribe to CORC, that service has many pathfinders. One thing to research
is how many patrons really use the pathfinder capabilities. Rich will find
out how Suzi Shaw is coming on adding counters to the web pages.
Rich suggested that the most helpful thing is
for subject specialists to identify key resources to help in improving the
database locator. Carol also said that everyone needs to make sure their pages
and links are working and up-to-date.
Gary wondered if there was a way to create a
list of every electronic journal that the library can access. Rich said on
the E-Journals web page many of the database publishers list which publications
they offer.
3) E-Reserves
Carol said with the expansion of the E-reserve
service this is going to be a very busy semester.

4) Room Scheduling
Gary announced that scheduling for the Reference
Conference Room and Room 148 is now being done through Outlook. He suggested
that staff members attend Stacy Wall’s next Outlook class to learn
how to schedule rooms. The Library West and Smathers conference rooms,
as well as the West Staff Lounge, are also scheduled with Outlook now.
