BUILDING OUR RESEARCH COLLECTIONS

Thanks to one-time additional funding from the Provostís Office last fall, Smathers Libraries is purchasing several substantial research collections.  These items were recently ordered and they will be recorded in WebLUIS  when they are received and processed. A few of the new purchases are:

Southern Newspapers.  A microform collection of the back issues of 15 newspapers from the southern United States, some dating back to the Civil War.

Black Workers in the Era of the Great Migration, 1916-1929. Microfilmed primary documents related to the operations and labor conditions of industries during World War I, and the movement of black workers from the rural south to northern urban centers.

Diario de La Habana.  Microfilm of this government gazette covering early years of the new Cuban republic, 1915-1920s.

Women in World History:  A new 20 volume biographical encyclopedia of women.

Directory of American Scholars: The latest edition of a biographical source from the American Council of Learned Societies.

Papers of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Florida, 1865-1870.  At our request, these important papers on Reconstruction in Florida are being microfilmed at the National Archives;  copies will be housed at the Smathers Libraries.

Theologische Realenzyklopadie.  We purchased additional volumes to this ongoing encyclopedia of religion.

Aerial Maps from the National Archives.  The 1,355 prints that complete UFís  holdings of the earliest aerial photographs of Florida.  This section dates from 1935-1942.

BBC Shakespeare Plays on Video.  The complete collection of plays produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Romance of the Knight Zifar.  Facsimile edition of El Libro del Cavallero Zifar (1304), the first book of chivalry written in Castilian Spanish, with 242 illuminations.

Theatrum Sanitatis.  Facsimile edition of a 14th-15th century treatise on the concepts of health and hygiene based on Greco-Roman and Arabic medical treatises, from the work of the Baghdad Christian physician Ibn Botlan (written ca. 1052-1063).

Micklerís Books Purchase.  Florida history materials including 450 books, more than 100 historic maps, newspapers and more than 100 letters and pieces of memorabilia.  This collection came to us from the largest private collection of Floridiana in the world.
