Filming Production for June
Sixty-nine monograph titles/volumes were filmed during the month of June, as
well as two serials titles, which comprised 45 volumes. In addition, 197
pamphlet titles/volumes. This filming created a grand total of 311 volumes
and 268 titles filmed on 33 reels. Although the Preservation Department
has shot 89 reels of film, none have been shipped to the National Agriculture
Library, because the box they must be shipped in, has not yet been filled.
Cathy has been in regular contact with Dan Lech at NAL, and they are not worried
that we have not yet shipped reels. With June's statistics, Cathy reported
we have fulfilled our Title quota, and are almost halfway to the Volumes
goal. Nelda also reported that with the great student filming commitment,
the filmers will soon catch up with the cataloguers and run out of materials to
film. She and Will are currently researching a copy of the Union Catalogue
of Holdings at the UF Agriculture Stations that was provided by Betsy Simpson to
determine if any of their holdings will fill gaps in our holdings.
Reprographics students have been cataloguing the microfilm product on OCLC. However, a slight problem has occurred in that not all records were brought up to AACR2 guidelines, but did have authority work done on them. Nelda will look at each record to determine its level of cataloguing and upgrade those needing minor work. Others will be sent back to Cataloguing for upgrade.
Cataloguing
Production for June
Jack and Susan continue to tackle the serials and monographs that need
cataloguing. Susan catalogued two serial titles which comprised 37 volumes
and added 17 personal name authorities to OCLC during the month of June.
In addition, two corporate name authorities were also added to OCLC. Susan
has also been doing quality control on Jack's cataloguing records, and is
currently working on ten serial titles. She also requested nine titles
through ILL and has received three from the Lake Alfred Experiment
Station. Susan has also completed 12 more requests that will be placed
through ILL this week, and will contact Preservation when a request is
filled. Jack catalogued 39 monograph titles/volumes and 12
thesis/dissertation titles/volumes in June, and has also completed 128
volumes of the UF Agriculture Extension Bulletins.
NAL Donations
Cathy sent a list of titles we could use for filming to Dan Lech at the
National Agriculture Library. He has received permission from his
supervisors and NAL to transfer ownership of these materials to the University
of Florida. This means these items could be added to the collection after
filming, if they are in good condition. He has already sent one title to
us, and will be reviewing the NAL stacks for more of those on the list Cathy
forwarded.
Rush Cataloguing Request
When an item is received from ILL, it will need to be catalogued ASAP, so
that we may try to have it catalogued and filmed before the date it must be
returned to the lending institution. Susan said it is perfectly acceptable
for Will to ask her to catalogue an ILL title immediately, so that this can be
accomplished. He should bring these materials up to her personally.
Six
Month Report to Cornell
Cathy has begun work on this, and will have it finished as soon as UF fiscal data for June is available from Division of Sponsored Research. In
addition, Cathy announced the Grant Coordinator is retiring, and will be
replaced by two Co-Coordinators. The new Co-Coordinators have added a new
subject heading: home economics. Will will let Vernon know so that he can
do some searching and possibly add other titles to the bibliography.
Preservation staff may also do some preliminary searching of their own to
identify possible titles.
Lake Alfred Updates
Jack made a trip to Lake Alfred to bring back volumes to fill gaps in UF's
holdings.
USNP Cataloguing Schedule for Susan
Preservation received nine boxes of newspapers for the USNP grant that will
need to be catalogued before they can be filmed. One title, The Corner
Cupboard, has a record on OCLC, but if this record is complete and up to
AACR2 guidelines, is uncertain. Susan will come to Preservation on Monday,
July 17 to catalogue this and the other titles that have been in a loft for some
time (Herald Express and Wildwood Echo).
Respectfully
Submitted,
