Filming Production for May:
Filming finally got moving in May!! Katie, an excellent student filmer, has been putting in a consistent 30 hours a week the entire month. [Please see the May 2000 filming statistics for exact figures.] She has been cranking out the film and it has looked great. She is with us throughout the rest of the summer and will stay on in the Fall to finish out the grant. We are just thrilled.
She has started on the volumes that came down from Cataloging in April, finished them and started on the long serial run of Citrus and Vegetable Magazine. We were able to fill in the missing volumes and issues of the title from various sources and will be able to film many years of the title. Her next task will be filming the various analyzed series.
Cataloging Production for May:
May was serials month for Susan and Naomi. [Please see the May 2000 cataloging statistics for exact figures.] Naomi, upon her return from the CONSER workshop, met with Susan, and they determined that the USAIN titles that Susan works on should in fact count toward our CONSER stats. They worked very closely together and got a lot of work done in May.
A decision was made to definitely hire a temporary, 6 week, summer cataloger to work on monographs. This would allow Susan to continue concentrating on the serials. Jack Fisher, who used to work in the library, was hired and began very early in June. He attended the June 7th meeting. He, along with Susan, attended a training session on monograph copy cataloging given by Jackie Brown.
Susan is starting to fill out the manual ILL form with the data that Josie has been collecting. She will make copies for Preservation before forwarding the titles on to David Fuller. It was noted that many of our serial holdings are incomplete. Jimmie Lundgren had the brilliant idea of speaking with her contact at the Lake Alfred Experiment Station. Her friend Pam is the librarian there and might be able to loan us some volumes and issues of journal titles that we are missing. It turns out that Jack is taking a class near the Experiment station and he will take one of the Library vans later in June to pick up anything that Pam can gather for us.
Interlibrary Loan:
Will continues to work with Jane Anne in ILL to track down monographic titles. The issue of length of loan period was raised. The loan period might not be long enough to receive the volume, search for film in OCLC and RLIN, send it up to Cataloging, get it back, film it, wait for the processing, do QC, wait for the duplication and get it back to the ILL office before it is due back at its home library.
Other:
The official extension letter arrived. Cathy has been talking with Dan Lech at NAL in the hopes that they might also have some of the serials missing from UF holdings. Cathy plans to hit up Special Collections again for more monographs and theses/dissertations. She will be requesting items from Rare books, Archives, Baldwin and Florida History.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cathy Mook
