GOALS:
-
Look into increased
de-acidification in-house, on an ongoing basis, of either manuscript materials
from Special Collections, or African pamphlet materials.
- Concentrate on the
re-housing, using envelope pams produced in-house, of Special
Collections materials now housed in acidic binders.
-
Work
on guidelines and recommendations for shelving of non book materials.
- Use some of the CMI
boxing to enclose the fragile volumes of the US Serial set housed in the
Government Documents Library.
-
Produce a brochure
for the Conservation Unit detailing the treatments with an emphasis on
the blast freezer.

- Primary Contact:
- John Freund (johfreu@mail.uflib.ufl.edu)
- Objectives:
- Presently de-acidification is used only for maps and limited flat paper
items.
- Make use of the equipment and supplies for de-acidification we have in the
unit.
- In collaboration with collection managers, decide where best to use the
resources.
-
-
- Progress:
- Have spoken with staff in the Map Library many times over the year
trying to get a steady supply of materials. Have been promised material from
both the Map & Imagery Library, and Florida History, but after a couple of
weeks it quits coming and I am told that other projects have taken priority.
- In April 2002 I talked to Archives and got one folder of items and then no
more.
- I am now putting out a more general request to all of Special Collections
but no one really seems very interested.

- Objective:
- Early volumes of the Serial Set need protection. Many have loose covers and
pages.
- Progress:
- November 2001: Have boxed about 100 of the set starting with Volume #1.
- June 2002: Boxed an additional 165. Will stop at this point because of lack
of expansion space on the shelving.
