DUTIES
The incumbant is responsible for the following:
CONSERVATION AND REPAIR
- Uses independent judgement to restore or repair bindings in accordance with historical styles and conservation requirements. This may include construction of new spines, rebacking, resewing of the textblock and complete rebinding.
- Performs various paper repair techniques to correct tears, lacunae, stains etc. Examples of paper repair include; endsheet replacement, tissue repairs, guarding of center folds and removing and replacing old mends.
- Creates protective enclosures including phase boxes, porfolios, rare book boxes, and polyester
encapsulations. In this activity, the incumbant derermines the extent of the damage and creates the
enclosure which best promotes both use and protection of the material.
- Tests paper, textiles, leather, adhesives and other library materials and structures by chemical and mechanical means to determine their durability and longevity. Examples of tests are those for acid, ground wood and alum content and flexibility.
- In collaboration with the Conservator, performs treatment and repairs to materials from Special Collections.
RECORD KEEPING, TRACKING AND ROUTING OF MATERIALS
- Tracking and routing of repair material from entry in the Department to exit. This is done primarily through NOTIS.
- Decides appropriate treatments for items entering the Department , and routes materials to the appropriate Unit.
- Keeps records and treatment reports current and up to date.
- Maintains daily and monthly statistics.
- Answers the telephone, routes calls and/or takes messages when needed.
- In the absence of the Unit Head, provides care and treatment information to the public and other libraries when needed.
STUDENT ASSISTANTS AND QUALITY CONTROL.
- Train assign and monitor the work of the student assistants.
- Monitor quality control of the product produced by the student assistants.
