IDENTIFICATION AND INITIAL ROUTING.
- Catalog Department... Items should be placed on the binding truck.
- Repair items will be routed to the Conservation Unit.
- Circulation And Shelving...Items should be set aside at the circulation desk. At least once a week, or whenever 5 or more items have been collected, all items should be boxed and sent or brought to the Conservation Unit, Preservation Department, Room 7 Library East.
RECEIPT OF MATERIAL.
- Upon receipt the Conservation Unit will charge out the material in NOTIS/LUIS, on the CONSERVATION REPAIR charge card. The item will also be inspected and logged onto the in-house computer with the date received, condition of the book, and the treatment to be performed.
ROUTING WITHIN CONSERVATION.
If the book is to be repaired in-house, it is then it is placed on the appropriate holding shelf to await treatment. Occasionally, a book is not repaired, but sent on for another treatment or decision. These may include:
- Brittle Books... Discharged from repair and sent to the Brittle Books Unit.
- Commercial Binding... Item is discharged from repair, and charged out to commercial binding.
- Review... If a volume is too damaged to be repaired, it is discharged from Conservation and returned to circulation with the instructions to be forwarded to the bibliographer for a decision as to the future of the book. See Collection Management Red Book Bulletin #6.6.
In all these cases, the treatment records in the conservation database are updated. After repairs are complete, the items are discharged, and returned through ID mail to the circulation desk of the appropriate Library. Our records are updated to show what work was done and the date the book was discharged.
