DEFINITIONS

PROCEDURE

TRIMMING MATERIALS.

  1. Select two boards at least 1 cm larger than the item on all sides and trim the boards as follows:
    • Height of the item plus 2 cm.,
    • Width of the item plus 1 cm.
  2. Select one strip of 3" bookcloth and cut 5 cm higher than the boards
  3. Select one piece of mul 3" wide and the height of the textblock minus 1 cm.

TEXT BLOCK PREPARATION

  1. Open pamphlets to the center fold.
  2. Remove and discard staples.
  3. Using awls, pierce evenly spaced holes through the pamphlet. The holes should be about 4cm apart and, depending on the height of the pamphlet, there should be three, five or seven holes.

SEWING

  1. Thread a needle with linen thread. The length should be 5 times the height of the text block.
  2. Pick up the first section to be sewn. Pass the threaded needle into the first hole at the top, starting from the outside. Leave about a 6 cm tail on the outside.
  3. Bring the needle and thread back out the section through the second hole.
  4. Bring the needle back in through the same hole, forming a loop on the outside of the holes.
  5. At the end of the section, exit the last hole and stop at the outside.

  6. Chain link

  7. Enter the first hole at the bottom of the text block, and exit at the second to the outside.
  8. Bring the thread through the coresponding loop of the first section, and return through the same sewing hole so the thread is interlocked.
  9. Pull in direction of sewing to tighten threads and draw the sections together.

  10. Chain link

  11. Repeat for the rest of the loops, exiting the last hole to the outside.
  12. Tie off thread with the tail at the beginning of the first section with a square knot.
  13. Continue on with additional sections if needed using the same prodedures.

  1. Put sewn block in press and glue up spine with pva and let dry.
  2. Remove from press and tip on folded endsheets.
  3. Return to press, glue up spine again and attach mul to glued spine.

  2. Glue up the inside of the cloth strip and place the boards on the glued cloth leaving a minimum of the thickness of the block plus 6mm in the center between the boards.
  3. Glue down the top and bottom turn ins and let dry.
  4. Attach a security strip to one of the boards .
