CONSERVATION: BRITTLE BOOKS

All general collection items arriving in the Unit for conservation treatment which appear to be brittle, are given a double-fold test. Results are not recorded in the treatment record. Those items with a 0 - 2 fold failure are set with process code "PB" and set aside to be picked up by Brittle Books, which is part of the Digital library Center.

Certain items are NOT given a double fold test. These items should be routed to the Conservator for review. These items include:

  • Items from Special Collections (Rare Books, Baldwin, Archives, Belknap, Florida History),
  • Any item printed before 1850,
  • Any item from a limited circulation or a locked stack area ,
  • Any "unique" item (signed copy, unusual binding, unusual format ...)
