Shelf Reading and Blocking

Two tasks that you are responsible for on a daily basis are Shelf Reading and Blocking.

  • Shelf reading is when you read every call number on a shelf to ensure that it is in the proper order.
  • Each semester you are responsible for shelf reading your entire section at least once.
  • You are also responsible for shelf reading as you shelve your section. This ensures that the ares that are getting the most use are kept tidy.
  • There is a shelf reading binder kept next to the sign in book. It is red. When you shelf read you should record what you have done in this binder. You will need to record:
    • Your name
    • The time you started and ended
    • The call number that you started and ended on
    • The number of books you found out of order and put back in their proper place.
  • Blocking is when you bring each book out to the end of the shelf so that the entire shelf is lined up with the edge of the shelf and all books are standing upright with a book end placed at the end of each shelf.

Properly Blocked Section                                                             Section that needs to be Blocked

  • You should block as you shelf read and vice versa.
  • Feel free to shelve with a partner. This can help to make the process less monotonous. Just make sure to keep your voices down so as to not disturb the patrons.
