The following is a list of tasks this department is responsible for:
- Shelve books, periodicals, microforms, and state documents
- Shelf-read the stacks and maintain shelf-reading log for assigned sections

- Assist in some physical labor projects that call for the moving of furniture,
shelving parts, other heavy items, etc.
- Identify items that need new call number labels
- Assist with the production of new call number labels
- Identify materials that are in need of repair/preservation
- Identify possible cataloging problems
- Sweep and level floors (i.e. placing items strewn throughout the building back on their shelves or on a cart to be shelved on the 2nd Floor)
- Maintain the order of the reshelving carts
- Identify end panel labels that need to be replaced
- Identify areas of the collection that may need shifting due to lack of growth room
- Assist with the planning of shifting projects

- Help carry out shifting projects
- Reboot public work stations when patrons accidentally shut them down
- Assist patrons with problems at the remote work stations on floors 3, 4 and 5
- Assist patrons who need assistance locating call numbers
within the stacks
- Refer patrons to the Circulation and Information Desks for questions when you do not know the answer.
- Identify and report building problems
- Assist patrons with the operation of the compact shelving
- Assist librarians in weeding the stacks when necessary
- Identify items that should be classified as oversized
- Report strange patron behavior
- Floor supervisors supervise the work of other student assistants and manage the work flow on their respective floors
- Floor supervisors assist the Stack Management Supervisor with special projects
- Work with Microsoft Excel and Google Documents on a variety of stacks projects.
- Other projects and duties as assigned
These are not all daily activities and some tasks will be assigned to individual employees.
New employees will first concentrate on the tasks outlined in the "Daily Routine" page of this website. Once trained and familiar with the library, new tasks will be assigned. If you have any questions about your responsibilities within the department please contact the Stack Management Supervisor.
