Floor Supervisor Job Description

 

Floor supervisors are responsible for all the work done on their assigned floor. As a supervisor, you will be given an adequate number of student assistants to maintain order on your floor. The floor supervisor must be in constant communication with the Stack Maintenance Supervisor. You may be asked to work extra hours apart from your weekly schedule*, to develop weekly floor reports and to keep statistics. Shelving situations change daily, and you will be expected to assess the situation and act appropriately.

*You may be asked to work during finals week, intersessions and holiday weekends. Also, you may be requested to work when the Stack Maintenance Supervisor is absent.

1. Check with the Stack Maintenance Supervisor before you make any decisions about moving books or changing the order of materials on your floor.

2. Supervise student assistants daily to make sure they are using their time wisely. Make sure you set a good example for your floor by using your time wisely. Check with students who miss any shift of work to find out why. If their schedule needs adjustment, then notify the Stack Maintenance Supervisor.

3. Understand how to operate the public computers and the functions of the catalog.

4. Understand the workflow of each floor.

5. Train each student assistant on your floor about the floor's specific workflow. Make each student assistant familiar with the location of all the items that are housed on your floor.

6. Encourage shelf reading as a daily task for your student assistants.
