Computer Rules

Welcome to Marston Science Library and the Smathers Library Domain.

  • We ask that you create a “secure password” for logon to our Staff computers.
  • At least 12 characters long.
  • A nonsensical combo of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation (some punctuation marks are excluded). No blank spaces.
  • If you use Aleph, the Staff side of our Library catalog:
  • Create a different password for your Aleph logon. Never leave a password at the default.

Be security conscious!

  • It is against University and Library computer security policies:
  • To share passwords
  • To log on for anyone else
  •    In other words - whoever is working at a computer must be the one who is logged on to it.
  • To allow non-employees to use employee computers
  • To download games, etc, from the Web
  • Remember to log off:
  • Before you leave for the day
  • Or, if you must leave your computer unattended for a length of time
  • While browsing the Web, avoid questionable sites, and be careful what you click.
  • Likewise: delete weird email without opening it.
  • Report – immediately – any evidence of virus or spy-ware on your computer!

Follow our routines for fixing Staff computer problems.

  • Systems Liaisons take care of equipment problems. All you need to do is:
  • Report problems (computers, software, printers, network) to your supervisor or to a Systems Liaison.

Follow our rules for Staff computer maintenance.

  • Our computers remain ON - all the time. (Monitors may be turned off.)
  • Reminder: Users must log off.
  • Downloading your own software or stuff from the Web onto our computers is not allowed.
  • We provide the software you need for your job.
  • A Systems Liaison will run new installs, updates and other configuration changes.
  • Be careful not to delete Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts:
  • We provide the shortcuts because we all need easy access to those commonly used programs.
  • Clear your Browser cache – on a regular basis. We can show you how.
  • If you make a mistake, don’t panic, we can fix it! But, please let us know.

Be courteous.

  • Remember, computers are supplied to employees for doing work.
  • Limit your personal use of your computer to a reasonable amount of time.
  • Serve your clients first…Library patrons and other Library employees!
