1st Floor

Compact Shelving

The 1st floor contains primarily compact shelving. This means that only one row out of each set of shelving can be open at a time. Buttons located on the end panels of each row are used to move the shelving.

  • Be careful when using compact shelving. There are sensors in the floor of each aisle and in a kickplate located along the bottom of the shelving of each aisle.
  • Override Key- The override key allows the shelving to be used  even when a row is malfunctioning. This key overrides all of the sensors meaning that it no longer registers if someone is in an aisle. Prior to using the key check all aisles that will be effected by the override to ensure there is no one in the aisle. DO NOT LEAVE THE OVERRIDE KEY IN THE SHELVING ESPECIALLY TO WALK DOWN AN AISLE. If the override key is left in the aisle and a patron unknowingly pushes a button the sensors will not register that you are in there and will begin to move.
  • If a section of shelves is not functioning properly please let a Circulation Supervisor or the Stack Management Supervisor know so that they can be repaired as soon as possible.

Periodicals through 1989- Black Tape

These are also known as Journals when bound and loose issues when they are not bound. These periodicals date from 1989 and before, and they have one strip of black tape. Most of these items are bound together with a hard cover, although few may still be in loose issue form. The bound volumes of these should have a stamp on the inside front or back cover that reads 'PERIODICAL'. The loose issues have a 'P' written under the call number on their label.

The reshelving area is located at the South end of Bank C. The reshelving area for these periodicals is not kept in call number order; however, they are grouped by call letter. All 1st floor periodicals are shelved in Bank C and Bank D of the compact shelving.

Folio / Oversize Periodicals- Black Tape

The oversized/folio bound periodicals are shelved at the very north end of Bank C. The ailes that these periodicals are housed in are identified by yellow end panel labels. Their reshelving area is located at the South end of Bank C and is not kept in call number order.

Indexes

These are books made up of lists of articles, authors, subjects or various other identifying agents used for advanced research. They are located in in the North end of Bank D. The ailes that these periodicals are housed in are identified by blue end panel labels. Their reshelving area is located at the South end of Bank C and is not kept in call number order.

Documents Department

The Documents Department is responsible for shelving all documents(except state agricultural documents). Place these items in the return basket on the douments reference desk or hand them to the person at the desk.

SOME TIPS ON IDENTIFYING DOCUMENTS:

1. Any item with a call number that begins with the number 100 - 109 is a State Document. These documents belong on the 2nd Floor.

2. An item with a call number that has a colon( : ) or a slash ( / ) in it is a Federal Document.

BE CAREFUL: Do not get these confused with the Library of Congress books that are on the 4th and 5th floors.

HINTS:

1. Look for a possible "DOCUMENT" stamp on the cover or inside the front or back cover.

2. Look for a sticker "DOC" or "DOCS" near the call number. If you are unsure, then you can check in the catalog. It will read under "LOCATION:" SCIENCE LIBRARY-Documents or SCIENCE LIBRARY State Documents
