Middle Manager's Meeting

Critical Update Problems

1. A list of the 800 Library IPs turned up 400 that do not have the MS patches updated as they should.
2. These machines are vulnerable to being taken over and turned into an attackbot on the Net.
3. One area of the Library had machines with more than 10 updates undone. Apparently they have no liaison support.
4. Liaisons should be devoting 4 hours per week to their liaison duties. If these updates aren’t getting done, then the liaison program is not functional.
5. If these machines are compromised, the Libraries will be responsible for disrupting UF business. We appear to be dropping the ball here. What should we do to fix it?
6. Expect more intense scrutiny from Net Services regarding this specific vulnerability. Even Microsoft has released several notices about it.
7. The campus filter works, but stuff can still come through unrecognized.
8. The number of workstations has diminished since last week. Middle Managers are aware of the problem, later today the Liaisons will be informed.
9. Do we need to spot check machines? It’s intrusive, but may be necessary.
10. Not all updates are as critical as this one, but it still must be a priority for Liaisons to set aside time to do this – beyond their routine work.

Virus Updates

1. Current virus, MIMAIL, is the one getting the most press. It’s a worm that carries it own mail server. It pretends to be you or anyone in your address book and sends it out.
2. Your virus pattern should be at 598 or higher. There are problems with certain machines. If they are not automatically updating after a reboot, inform SYSHELP.
