Current Position: Head, Systems Department, University of Florida Libraries

Hired to supervise two computer programmer/analysts in 1985, became acting department head in 1986 and head in 1988. The department supports the Library mission with programming for both standalone and client-server applications; hardware configuration, purchasing, and support for all computer equipment; design and support of the seven Library LANs; configuration and administration of multiple Windows servers for SQL, Exchange email, file and print, and IIS/Web applications; and liaison with external network and computer groups, including current appointment as Library IT Security Manager. My position has technical oversight for $2-300,000 in annual IT expenditures. During my tenure, the Library grew from six personal computers and a few dozen mainframe terminals to the current infrastructure of almost 800 workstations, seven switched 100 MHz Ethernet LANs, and more than a dozen Windows and Linux servers. The department currently has four programmer/analysts; an analyst supervisor; network administrator; two hardware/network technicians; a user support specialist; Library Webmaster; and two supporting automation librarians.

Advanced Microcomputer Solutions, Inc., Tampa, Florida


Responsibilities: 1) general management; 2) user liaison activities, including systems analysis and troubleshooting; 3) evaluation of microcomputer hardware and software; 4) configuration of customized computer systems; 4) training sales personnel to present a variety of hardware and software; and development and presentation of user training sessions.

Responsibilities: 1) end user consultation, problem solving, and training; 2) research data base design; 3) selection and use of statistical packages; 4) custom programming of research applications; 5) statistical/econometric modeling; 6) transfer of data between systems; 7) conversion of programs and packages between systems; 8) system configuration and selection; and 9) computer lab hiring and management. Most computer work done in a mainframe environment (CDC Cyber 170 series, under NOS and KRONOS).
