Ongoing Systems Updates
- Bill & Suzy attended the Interop Conference in Atlanta last week.
NT Service Pack 4 was released there.
Discovered that Linux is getting huge. It will support the developer community. Linux is not officially Unix, but it's very Unix-like.
SOMBA is a Linux file & print server to Windows clients that we will be experimenting with in the next few weeks. Linux has two major office suites available that don't change as rapidly as Microsoft.
Interop was dominated by NT - there wasn't a Mac on the floor, nor any IBM booth. All the big networkers were there, everything is oriented to NT. Novell had a presence, but not much buzz.
Peer switched seems to be the way to go with routing & switching.
Rumor has it that Microsoft will lose this round then appeal.
- "Geezer" (new mail server) is up & running. Winston has temporarily named it Smathers NTX. It is up on BDE. It does recovery in the background, but the monitor can load to display the recovery process.
- Carol Whitmer received a strange email message that contained the WAZU virus. Winston says he cleaned it, but it was infected when he reopened it. Could the virus be on the Exchange server? Virus cleans on the server level could prove difficult. The virus, itself, is annoying. It can be vicious and spread across platforms.
- Paige received a strange email from yo.org that he telnetted into Port 25 of our mail server. It was forwarded to Bobbie who forwarded it to NERDC Networking. They are checking to see if the Telnet allowed relay which could be a security problem.
- Suzy is out Oct. 26-27.
