Install Windows XP

  1. Power on the computer and hit F12 at the initial blue Dell Splash screen 
  2. Insert the Windows XP installation disk provided to you by Systems
  3. Using the arrow keys, select the CD-ROM Drive from the list of choices.
  4. When prompted, press any key to boot from the CD and allow the XP installation files to load.
    NOTE: During this portion of setup you will use the arrow keys and enter key to make selections, the mouse is inoperable.
  5. Press Enter to Setup Windows Now

  6. Press F8 to accept the license agreement.

  7. Press Esc to “Continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP”
  8. Select the existing partition from the list, generally labeled as “C: Partition1 [NTFS]

  9. Press D.
  10. Confirm your selection at the next screen by pressing Enter
  11. Confirm again by pressing L.
  12. Select “Unpartitioned space” from the list
  13. Press C to create a new partition in that space.
  14. Press Enter to create a new partition (Accept the default partition size).
  15. On the next screen press Enter to select “Setup Windows XP on the selected item”.
  16. Next select “Format the partition using the NTFS file system (Quick).

  17. Press Enter.
  18. You will go through 2 progress indicator bars, the first for the format and the second while setup copies.

  19. Press Enter to reboot when prompted.
    NOTE: The machine will reboot automatically if you miss the prompt.
    NOTE:  You can now use the mouse.
  20. Click Next when prompted to enter Regional and Language Options information (accept the defaults).

  21. Enter the following in the Name and Organization fields,
    Name: George A. Smathers Libraries
    Organization: University of Florida.

  22. Click Next.
  23. Enter the Product Key found on the front of the CD.
    NOTE: You can take the CD out while you type in the number.

  24. Click Next.
  25. Enter the workstation ID (WSID####) as the Computer Name. (PWSID#### for public machines)
  26. Enter your departmental Administrator Password. 
    If you do not know the password, contact Systems.

  27. Click Next.
  28. In the Date and Time Settings, change the Time Zone to “Eastern (US and Canada)”. 
  29. Verify the Date and Time are correct

  30. Click Next.
  31. At the Network Settings window, select “Typical settings

  32. Click Next (this information will be entered later).
  33. When prompted “Do you want this computer to be a member of a domain?”, select No.
  34. Click Next.
  35. Setup will continue and will reboot.
  36. At the Welcome to Microsoft Windows screen, click Next.
  37.  When prompted about Automatic Updates, select “Not right now”.
  38. Click Next.
  39.  When prompted for “How will this computer connect to the Internet?” select “LAN”.
  40. Enter the following information on the “Setting up a high speed connection” window: 
    IP address: (provided by Systems or from previous install)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: (128.227.xxx.1 – xxx will depend on what building you’re in),
    Preferred DNS: 128.227.54.45
    Alternate DNS:  128.227.54.18 
  41. Leave “Obtain IP automatically” and “Obtain DNS automatically” unchecked. 
  42. Click Next.
  43.  When prompted to register, select “No, not at this time.”
  44. Click Next.
  45.  In the “Who will use this computer” window, type “setup1” in first field.  Leave the remaining fields blank. 
  46. Click Next.
  47. Click Finish.
