Although the date on this work says 1983, do not let that fool you on how long it has been around. It has been in print since 1898 . It is the standard tool for work with the Anglo-Saxon language. The serious scholar would certainly require it for work in Anglo-Saxon literature (i.e. Beowulf) and language. The front matter contains an explanation of references and of principle contractions. The content is arranged alphabetically by the Anglo-Saxon word that is then translated into English. A must have for this collection.

The Oxford English Dictionary is a well-known and respected authority on the evolution of the English language. It is a guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources (including classical literature, Latin, and Anglo-Saxon). The OED covers words from across the English-speaking world (i.e. North America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Caribbean, etc). It also offers the best in etymological analysis, listings of variant spellings, and shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Fred Robinson is a scholar of Old English and has been writing books and articles in the field for years. This text is intended as a study guide for (graduate) students and philologists studying the language of Old English. Part one contains all of the background information needed to learn a language: pronunciation, inflexions, word formations, syntax, etc. This section also contains a very good appendix on verbs. Part two contains excellent notes on pronunciation and a huge glossary of Anglo-Saxon words. The index is searchable by subjects and words (inclucing Anglo-Saxon).

This site is hosted by the Center for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto. The Dictionary of Old English is meant to serve as a bilingual translation dictionary, as well as a historical dictionary. It follows the tradition of the Oxford English Dictionary and it is an inventory and description of the English language from its earliest appearance in written records beginning about 600 A.D. and running until 1150 A.D. The site claims that the Old English writings are about six times the size of the collected works of Shakespeare! Anglo-Saxon scholars will have a field-day.

This text has been around for a while and offers the reader a option. The most important being a table of references to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The scholar will find this feature handy. The front matter also contains the standard list of abbreviations and explanations of references in the work. A good compliment to the other middle English dictionary in this collection.
The Middle English Compendium has been designed to offer easy access to and interconnectivity between three major Middle English electronic resources: an electronic version of the Middle English Dictionary, a HyperBibliography of Middle English prose and verse based on the MED bibliographies, and an associated network of electronic resources.
