Collections: The Price Library of Judaica is especially strong in social, political, intellectual and communal history, Hebrew and Yiddish linguistics and literature, Israel, Zionism, Hebrew Scriptures, Judaism and rabbinics, bibliography, and homage, memorial, and jubilee volumes. An enormous amount of uncommon pamphlets and periodicals in all imaginable subject areas enhance the research potential of the Price Library. Founded in 1977 with the acquisition of the Leonard C. Mishkin collection, the Price Library now holds over 90,000 volumes and constitutes a regional center of research excellence in its subject field. The Library's circulating holdings are concentrated in twentieth-century materials, in all languages pertinent to the scholarly examination of the Jewish experience from antiquity to the present day, and in all geographical areas. Manuscript and archival collections in Jewish studies are not held.
Borrower information: The collections are available for the use of University of Florida faculty,
students, and staff, who use the Gator-1 identification card as their library card. New and replacement Gator-1 cards must be activated at a circulation desk, prior to first use of the card, even if items are charged to a previous Gator-1 card. A Special Borrower's card is available to unaffiliated users of Smathers Libraries materials. Information about activating Gator-1 cards and obtaining a Special Borrower card can be found by clicking your UF affiliation category on this webpage : http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/as/circ.html, or, by telephoning the Circulation Desk at Library West: (352) 273-2525. UF Libraries' Public Service Unit telephone numbers are listed at : http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/allphon.html. As well, UF's Directory Assistance personnel can connect callers to UF Libraries' units via the UF Information telephone number at (352) 392-0361.
Locating Materials: Price Library materials are listed in the new Endeca UF Libraries' Catalog, with URL: http://uf.catalog.fcla.edu
. As well, the catalog may be accessed in its previous version via a link in the gray horizontal bar at the bottom of each Libraries' catalog web page. In both versions of the catalog, materials in Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic, Cyrillic and other vernacular writing systems, have been converted to transliterated form using ALA-LC Romanization rules. For access to Florida Jewish newspapers, uncataloged serials, ephemera (calendars, booksellers' catalogs, broadsides, temple bulletins), and vertical file materials, consult a Judaica staff member. A chronological card file of pre-1881 Hebrew imprints is maintained in the Judaica office. Early Hebraica and other rarities are now organized for use at the Special Collections Research Room located in the Smathers Library building. Please consult Special Collections' staff for access to these non-circulating items. Microform resources supporting Jewish Studies and Judaica Library materials are primarily housed in the UF Libraries' Microfilm area on the 3rd floor of Library West. Guides to the Price Library's active serials, memorial books of East European Jewish communities, and major microform title holdings are available upon request.
Borrowing Materials: With the exception of reference books, electronic computer media, rare materials, microforms, unbound periodicals, and brittle materials, the Judaica Library's cataloged holdings generally circulate to users according to policies established by the Judaica Librarian, in concert with Smathers Libraries Circulation Policies, stated here: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/as/circ.html . The George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida, is a member of the OCLC and ARL bibliographic networks. Faculty and students from ARL owner-member libraries are extended access to all unrestricted collections. Interlibrary loan and photocopy services are available, though some restrictions and denials-of-loan, may apply to individual title requests if those materials are brittle, are on Course Reserve status, or are in-process for library treatments by UF Libraries departments or its contracted bindery. Out-of-town borrowers should also consult their local library's policies and instructions regarding interlibrary loan requests.
Copying Services: Self-service photocopy machines are available in Library West on its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. The physical condition of fragile materials may necessitate copying or filming by a trained member of the UF Libraries' staff. As well, photocopy and loan requests made via Interlibrary Loan may be restricted, or denied, if materials are brittle.
