The Smathers Library subscribes to numerous electronic services that provide access to fulltext journals and newspapers.  All (with one exception*) are available via the UF Library Homepage and Online Catalog. EBSCOhost– Academic Search Premiere(1975-present)   Multidisciplinary index to scholarly journals and magazine, with many fulltext articles and book reviews.

GALENET --  Expanded Academic ASAP (1980-current)  Multidisciplinary index to scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers. Some fulltext and images available.

JSTOR     A fulltext archive to 500 scholarly journals in a wide range of disciplines in facsimile format (including images), from their beginnings until 3 – 6 years ago (cutoff date varies depending publisher embargo). DOES NOT INCLUDE recentissues/volumes.

PCI INDEX/FULL TEXT - Periodicals Contents Index Guide to the Tables of Contents of thousands of social sciences & humanities periodicals, from their first issues (some late 1700s) to the mid 1990s. About 300 journals are fulltext (others will be added), and the text of some can be searched by keyword.

PROJECT MUSE    Access to the fulltext of recent volumes/issues of about 250 scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.

Electronic Newspaper/Broadcast News Sources

ACCESSIBLE ARCHIVESPennsylvania Gazette(1751-1765)  The so-called “New York Times of the18th century.” Fulltext and graphics include advertisements.  This CD-ROM is available at Smathers Library East, Reference Desk.  Not available online.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS:  A 19th Century online collection of seven fulltext newspapers written by and for the African-American community during the 1800s.

AMERICAN PERIODICAL SERIES (APS Online) -- Contains fullpage images of over 1,400 American magazines and journals from colonial days to the beginning of the 20th century. Early publications represented are Benjamin Franklin's General Magazine, Medical Repository ( America’s first scientific journal), and Thomas Paine's Pennsylvania Magazine. The Golden age of American periodicals in the 19th century saw the serialization of Harriet Beecher Stowe's “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” in National Era, Edgar Allan Poe's contributions to the Southern Literary Messenger, and Margaret Fuller's articles in The Dial. Publications of the American Economic Association and Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences are among the early professional journals. Scribner's and Lippincott’s, and Ladies’ Home Journal are popular titles; Puck and McClure’s offer political and social commentary. Presented as digitized images, the database displays the original typography, drawings, graphic elements, and article layouts exactly as they were originally published.

 GALENET The Times ( London) Digital Archive,  1785-1985.

GODEY’S LADY’S BOOK   (1830-1865)  A magazine to “entertain, inform, and educate the women of America.”  Fulltext and graphics.

HARPWEEK    Fulltext and images of Harper's Weekly, 1857-1877.

LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC UNIVERSE    Includes a file of fulltext articles from state, national, and international newspapers, some going back 30 years.  Other databases are for the U. S. Serial Set, recent Congressional documents, business, and law.

THE NATION DIGITAL ARCHIVE America's oldest weekly magazine, covering politics, culture, books and the arts, since 1865, from thought-provoking writers, activists, and artists such as Henry James, Sinclair Lewis, Willa Cather, H.L. Mencken, Upton Sinclair, Margaret Mead, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre, Martin Luther King, Jr. Called "a dissenting, independent, trouble-making, idea-launching journal of critical opinion."
