Special Instructions for Searching Classics, Religion, and Philosophy Materials

Classics, Religion, and Philosophy materials are handled by permanent staff members only.

Because of discrepancies in how main entries are represented, lack of specificity of some foreign catalogs, and that many monographs in this field are quite expensive, the searcher should perform additional searches.

To search thoroughly, it may be necessary to include a few extra or specialized steps to insure that no duplicates are ordered:

    1. When working with particularly complex catalogs (ex. Teubner) search and input all items that are straight forward. Highlight those items, which are problematic and submit to the Coordinator or seek the advice of the Classics selector, Blake Landor.

    2. When ordering items from Teubner, E. J. Brill, or Societe de Edicion Belle Lettre catalogs, additional searches are required as title and/or author entries may vary.

    3. Use WorldCat or RLIN when there is any doubt about the main or title entry.

    4. When working with authors such as Plato, Plutarch, (Plutarque, Plutarc) additional searches are required to avoid duplication.

    5. When searching monographic series, up to three additional searches might be necessary to find issues/volumes that are in the collection and others that are on order. Always review the order record to see which issue/volume is on order or owned.
