About the Collection Management Support Unit
The primary role of the Collection Management Support Unit is to perform thorough bibliographic verification of all materials submitted by Bibliographers and Selectors in order to avoid duplication of materials owned by the University of Florida Libraries. This process requires the use of various on-line and paper reference resources in order that the appropriate edition, reprint or supplement is ordered. The CM Support Unit also has Reference Desk duties, which comprise approximately 20% of the unit's worktime.
The unit consists of one Coordinator, three Senior Library Technical Assistants, and one-three OPS student assistants. The unit creates provisional records using MARC format in the ALEPH database or orders directly via Gobi Edition 2, Yankee Book Peddler’s on-line site for those items not owned by the libraries. Approximately 20,000 records are created each fiscal year including compact discs, monographs, microforms, microtexts and visual materials (both VHS and DVD formats). All duplicated requests for material are returned to the selectors.
Many foreign titles are requested from Harrassowitz Book Dealer (online). We are also involved in a project with Blackwell's Book Services. We now order directly from them, using their online service.
All items submitted to the Collection Management Support Unit are date-stamped and handled sequentially. Materials are returned to the appropriate selector after they have been ordered for their review.
