Database
Changes
On January 1, 2003 we are making several database changes.
Factiva
is replacing Dow Jones Interactive, which has been
discontinued by the publisher.
EconLit is now hosted on
EBSCO.
Dissertation Abstracts
is moving to ProQuest. The
Business &
Industry Database
is changing to Gale. For more details see
UF Libraries Database Changes as of January 1, 2003.

Factiva
Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company, provides world
class global content, including Dow Jones and Reuters
Newswires and The Wall Street Journal - unduplicated in a
single service elsewhere.
Factiva
offers a global business information database with multiple
language interfaces and multilingual content covering nearly
8,000 sources.
ReferenceUSA
Smathers Libraries has
cancelled our subscription to
ReferenceUSA due to low usage, the high cost (almost
$10,000/yr.) of the database and budget constraints this
year. Remember that you can use any of the sources listed on
the Directories Guide
to identify companies. And most companies now have Web sites
that you can usually find through
Google. Companies are
savvy corporate communicators. They recognize the value of
having informative Web sites where they can showcase their
products and services and communicate their vision. Find out
more in the Company Tutor.
Thomson Analytics™
Thomson Analytics™ is replacing Piranhaweb. This new
product integrates company financial data from Worldscope,
daily pricing data and indexes from Datastream, I/B/E/S
earnings estimates, press releases from PR Newswire, Extel
reports and company filings. You can screen on hundreds of
variables, create custom sets, run preformatted reports and
download data and reports into Excel.
The
Enron Debacle
The Enron
bankruptcy has prompted serious calls for reforming U.S.
accounting and auditing practices. This
Case Study presents sample
sources of information and relevant documents available in
the
Business Library that explore
the consequences of this notorious business scandal.
The
Stock Market
During the bull market of the 1990s stock market investing
became the national pastime. The bear market years of
2000-2001 have sobered investors. Yet interest in investing
in stocks remains high because of the historically better
performance of stocks vs. bonds. In this
Case Study
you can sample sources of information you can access in the
Business Library that will teach you about
Investing and the
Stock Market.
Wall Street Journal
-- 1984 to date (In ProQuest) -- The first issue of The Wall
Street Journal was four pages long and sold for two cents.
Today, the paper is considered the preeminent publication
for business news and information on financial markets
worldwide. The database is popular in a variety of research
environments because of its in-depth indexing, which covers
not only complete bibliographic information but also
subjects, companies, people, products, and geographic areas.
Each issue of every newspaper is indexed thoroughly, so
researchers can access not only top news stories but also
detailed information from all the paper's sections. Even
such items as editorials, editorial cartoons, and letters to
the editor from well-known people are indexed. For each
article cited in the database, an abstract of up to 75 words
helps the researcher know if the complete text will meet his
or her needs. And because the database contains thousands of
full-text articles in the ASCII format, researchers never
need to worry about tracking down complete copies of the
information they need.
Business Dateline -- 1985 to date (In
FirstSearch) -- Regional information vital to
businesses. Includes information about library resources
that describe regional business activities and trends and
major stories on local firms, their products, and
executives. Provides online articles from regional
publications, Business Wire press releases, and major
newspapers. Subjects include agriculture, manufacturing,
company profiles, marketing, corporate planning,
professional services, corporate strategies, real estate,
executive profiles, regional business, financial services,
research and development, health care, retailing, high
technology, service industries, human resources and
transportation.
