Women's issues

  • For access to the ephemeral literature on African (and other) women (such as pamphlets, newsletter articles, government office or foundation reports, small circulation or special interest journals, etc.), try Contemporary Women's Issues® (via FirstSearch--see the UF library's web page). Provides full text access to global information on women. Journals, newsletters, research reports from non-profit groups, government and international agencies, along with fact sheets are easily accessed through CWI. Information on women in over 150 countries is compiled in a single collection bringing together such disciplines as sociology, psychology, health, education and human rights.
  • GenderWatch is also available through the library's web site via ProQuest. A full-text collection of international journals, magazines, newsletters, regional publications, special reports and conference proceedings devoted to women's and gender issues. The database provides in-depth coverage of the subjects that are uniquely central to women's daily lives, including family, childbirth, birth control, day care, domestic abuse, work and the workplace, sexual harassment, aging, aging parents, body image, eating disorders and social and societal roles. It also includes content on the impact of gender and gender roles on areas such as: the arts, popular culture and media, business and work, crime and criminology, education, research and scholarship, family, health care and medicine, politics, policy and legislation, pornography, religion, sexuality and sexology, sports and leisure.
  • See also the education, international development and human rights sections or separate pages for related information on women.
  • "The African Gender Institute (AGI) was established in 1996 at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, following a consultative process involving stakeholders in many parts of Africa. The AGI's Mission is to further gender equity in Africa by contributing towards transformation of inequitable institutions and social practices which constrain women's leadership potential and the furtherance of gender equity goals in Africa.
  • Africa bibliography contains a specialized index to over 20,000 articles on African women, the African Women's Bibliographic Database.
  • "African Women Global Network (AWOGNet) is a global organization that networks all men and women, organizations, institutions and indigenous national organizations within Africa, whose activities are targeted towards the improvement of the living conditions of women and children in Africa."
