resources for Africa
African newspapers
For local UF Africanists and other researchers interested in our library collections, a list of African
newspapers that are microfilmed in
the Reprographics unit of
our library's Preservation
Department is available.
If you read African newspapers, you
may find the Electronic
Newspapers of Sub-Saharan Africa -- African Newspapers Union List Project of
particular interest. It is compiled and maintained by Joseph
Caruso at Columbia University's Africana
library and "includes only links to full electronic text newspapers
from Sub-Saharan Africa that are available online without subscription."
A related page is the The Cooperative African Newspapers
Project. The Center for
Research Libraries (CRL) includes an extensive list of hundreds of African
newspapers held at the Cooperative
Africana Microform Project (CAMP) including publication information and holdings. UF
is a CRL/CAMP member, so all of their microfilm can be borrowed by UF faculty and
graduate
students free of charge via Inter-Library Loan.
Also of interest may the
Library of Congress Newspaper
and Current Periodical Reading Room page, 19th
and 20th Century Foreign Newspapers in Original Format ―
Inventory of Volumes Held in Remote Storage, which includes a number of
African titles. "With over 25,000 non-US titles, it is the largest
collection of overseas newspapers in the world."
For those with access to major news databases (e.g. Lexis-Nexis, NewsBank,
ProQuest) don't forget to search these! They increasingly offer material from
African newspapers.
Other sources for African news and current events
Abyz News Links
"Links to over 15,800 newspapers and other news sources from around the world."
There is a good strong section devoted to African
newspapers.
AfricaOnLine
includes articles from African newspapers and magazines.
Africast.com claims that it is
"the most comprehensive and exciting place for news, sports, entertainment,
and financial services relating to the extended global African community."
AllAfrica.com
"Everyday we post the content of more
than 60 African publications -- over 300 stories highlighting politics,
business, sport, and the latest music, book and entertainment news." All
Africa - All the Time. Note: Africa News Service has been subsumed by allAfrica.com
Chimera is an electronic
and print journal published by the USA/Africa
Institute.
BBC World Service
offers two sites based on its morning and evening broadcasts for Africa. Network
Africa and Focus
on Africa.
Mail & Guardian Home Page "Electronic Mail&Guardian
(eM&G) is the electronic media division of the
Mail&Guardian. The company considers the electronic media division to be central to
its long-term plans for growth. The Mail & Guardian was the first paper in Africa to
be available over the Internet-- in early 1994 -- and despite a modest budget and tiny
staff has grown into one of the biggest sites on the continent."
OnlineNewspapers.com has about
fifty countries listed under its Africa section. The number of actual papers
listed for a given country varies, of course.
Karen Fung at Stanford's Hoover Institute has created a list of sources for African Current Events
too. Her Africa South
of the Sahara: selected Internet resources is worth consulting.
Zambia Post has its own Web pages, including an archive of previous issues. These kinds of sources
are likely to increase rapidly over the coming year, so it may be worth searching some of
the general Web indexes to
see if a specific newspaper you are interested in has recently become available.
General news sources
Check with some of the standard US and European sources for their coverage of
international and African news as well. The New York
Times is available, as is the London-based Times. These are free, but
require you to register before using them.
NPR News provides a variety of potentially useful
material. Other primarily radio-based services are also available, such as the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Deutsche Welle's
DW-online offers news and audio-on-demand
in 35 languages, including Amharic, Hausa, and Swahili. The popular Yahoo service provides many links to a wide variety
of news, current events, and news index sources. Site searching is available for all or
specific parts of Yahoo, but it is also worth browsing the many more sources available
there than can reasonably be listed here.
You may also want to consider what is available from U.S. government sources.
Transcripts of VOA broadcasts (in various Internet audio
formats with broadcast excerpts in a number of languages) are available for the last seven
days. The African Policy Information Center
(APIC) site also covers issues of policy related to Africa.
The Kiosk "has links to news media all over the world, mainly to newspapers in the
countries' own language(s). The links are validated regularly." Currently lists 29
African countries, often with many more than one newspaper linked to each.
A number of sites, such as The Electronic
Newsstand and CRAYON (for "CReAte Your Own
Newspaper") let you customize the material you would like displayed for your own use.
These services let you return to updates on similar topics again and again.
