Serials Cataloging
Annual Highlights 2006/2007
Our CONSER cataloging output increased again in 2006/2007, although not as dramatically as last year. We showed gains in full-level record creation and authentication, and significant increases in maintenance of both CONSER and non-CONSER records. A significant portion of the original records created were from cataloging to support UF Digital Collections projects. (For statistical details, please see http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/catmet/sercat/CONSER07LOCAL.htm ).
Serials Cataloging team members helped evaluate the documentation and Metadata Application Profile for the CONSER Standard Record, which was implemented at UF in June.
We also completed the reclassification of Florida microfilm newspapers, and selected national and regional newspapers from a variety of classifications into a local adaptation of the Library of Congress A classification.
The Serials Cataloging team contributed to the Department goals in the following ways:
Improve interface between Aleph and WorldCat/Open Worldcat
-
Identified characteristics and sample size for a test load of Local Holdings recordsand submitted that test load to OCLC.
-
Prepare for Aleph upgrade to Version 18
-
Participated in testing Version 18
-
Reviewing ExLibris documentation for pertinent improvements related to serials workflow
-
Expand formats handled by Copy Cataloging
-
Copy Cataloging staff now regularly contribute to CONSER maintenance totals
Work continued on long-term backlog materials and reconciling outstanding problems from the periodicals reclassification project.
In 2007/2008, we expect to complete the reclassification of microfilm newspapers, and to continue providing cataloging copy for serials in various digitization projects. We will also move forward with the Local Holdings batch-load process, establishing a reporting system and workflow for submitting regular updates.
