Copy Cataloging
Annual Report for FY2004
The key word for FY2004 was change. Our overall, two-part goal: survive with our sanity intact and remain as productive as possible. We appear to have successfully reached, even exceeded, the second part of our goal. As to the first part, at least no one has noticed if we failed to achieve it.
- In the last two months of FY2003, our staff
began learning how to assign LC call numbers in order to assume responsibility
for most for the cataloging of monographic print material with copy in
OCLC within our department. By the end of August, that training was essentially
complete; although there continued to be a good deal of informal one-on-one
training. Tatiana Barr, Jackie Brown and Jackie Heiland from Contributed
Cataloging were invaluable in all aspects of call number training.
- Gerald Langford, Priscilla Williams, Tatiana
Barr and Jackie Brown also freely offered their time and energy in helping
our unit tackle our next goal - learning to do more thorough and in depth
authority work.
- By October, Copy Cataloging staff had risen
to the challenge and were assigning LC call numbers and doing in depth
authority work including creation of local series authorities. In FY2004,
staff created 101 local series authorities and cataloged 1,822 titles
for which call numbers had to be assigned.. The general review of LC call
numbers assigned by Copy Cataloging staff ended in January 2004.
