HOLDINGS and ITEMS--COMPARISON OF THE ALEPH NAVIGATION WINDOW/MAP WITH LUIS COPY HOLDINGS SCREEN

Comparison of the ALEPH Navigation Window/Map and the Copy Holdings Record of LUIS (F5 Command)

ALEPH's Navigation Map (Nav Map) is the closest screen in ALEPH to equal the Copy Holdings Record in LUIS that we viewed with the F5 command. Both include the same basic information, in one form in LUIS and in another form in ALEPH.

LUIS contained it all in one screen which acted as a platform from which we could issue other commands to take us to the MARC Holdings record, Item records, Order Record, Serials subscription, and Circulation information, etc.

LUIS Copy Holdings Record:

ALEPH's Navigation Map provides a summary view of the Bibliographic record, location and call number, and the records tree on the left to the various kinds of records that make up a complete record for a single individual title, monograph or serial. Clicking on any one of the links will display the related record in the
display window, and using the buttons on the right allows you to move it into the appropriate Module for editing. The Navigation Map also has some buttons related to functions you can perform in the Nav Map itself. See below for an illustration of the Navigation Map for the same title and compare it to the LUIS screen.

The Navigation Map in ALEPH Search Module:

To summarize from ALEPH documentation:

The purpose of the Navigation Map/Window or Nav Map is threefold:

  1. Viewing a tree of all records in the system that are related to the Bibliographic record.
  2. Viewing summary information for each of the records and activities related to the Bibliographic record, e.g.: items, orders, subscriptions or loans.
  3. Pushing (or moving) records from one module to another to be able to work on them in the appropriate module.
