AFA FAQ:  Answers to Common Patron Questions

GENERAL

Do you work here?
Yes.  May I help you?

 How do I use the Catalog?
 If desk is not busy, assist patron at the workstation near  the desk.  Call a librarian for assistance if the desk is too busy or if the question is more than a general nature.

 Can I use a stapler, hole punch, etc.?
 A stapler and hole punch are located on a table near  the circulation desk.

Can I reserve a study carrel?
No.  They are not reserved.

Can I tape this poster up?
If it follows our guidelines, it can be posted on the AFA Community Bulletin Board.  To review guidelines, <link under construction>

Can I drink water from my cup, sports bottle, etc.?
No.  There is a water fountain near the south entrance if you need a drink.  Food and Drink are not allowed in the AFA Library.

What is the difference between "Reference" and "Reserve"?
The "reference collection" contains non-circulating materials such as indexes, dictionaries, and encyclopedias.  It is located on the main level and patrons may use the materials in the library without ID or time limit.

The "reserves collection" is a temporary location for items set aside by instructors for students in their classes.  The reserve collection is kept at the circulation desk.  Reserve items check out for 2 hours, in-library use.  ID is required for use of reserves.

Where are the reserves lists?
Course reserves for the current semester are listed in ERES Course Reserves.  Patrons can search by course number or instructor.   Links to electronic documents as well as call numbers for physical items are found through ERES.


DIRECTIONAL QUESTIONS

How do I get to the AFA Library? (Where are you  located?)
From on campus:  The AFA Library is in Fine ArtsBuilding A (FAA), second floor.  FAA is located just  south of Little Hall, in the Fine Arts Complex.
From off campus:  Enter campus from 13th Street (US441).  Turn on Museum Road.  At the parking garage, take a right onto Newell Road.  Stop at the parking office to obtain a parking pass and directions.

Where is the nearest free phone?
A courtesy phone is located in Fine Arts Building C (FAC) on the first floor.

Where is the nearest pay phone?
Little Hall.

Differences in FAA, FAB, FAC, FAD.
The first two letters stand for "Fine Arts".
The third letter designates the building.
This building is FAA (Fine Arts A).
The bridge at our south entrance connects to FAC.
FAD is contains art studios and faculty offices.
FAB is the University Gallery and the Adjacent Lecture  Halls.

Where is the Architecture Computer Lab?
A CIRCA computer lab is located in Architecture Building, Room 131.  The phone number is 392-1009.

Where is the Slide Library (Visual Resources Center)?
The Visual Resources Center is located on the first floor of  Fine Arts Building A.  The phone number is 392-0247.

Where is Mead Library?
PK Younge Lab School.  1080 SW 11th Street.

Where are the restrooms?
There are restrooms located on the first floors this building (FAA) and FAC.   At night, patrons will need to use the facilities in FAC.


FACULTY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

Can my student assistant check out books for me?
Yes.  You must officially designate a "proxy borrower". Applications are available at any library circulation desk.

I would like to place these items on reserve.  What do I do?
If Reserves Coordinator (Tisha) is available, ask her to talk with the faculty member.  If not, provide instructor with proper forms for the type of materials they are requesting.   Make sure they provide the following minimun information:  full name, email, phone number, course number, number of students in course, complete citations to articles, books, etc, loan period requested for physical items (books, drawings, videos, etc.)

Can you order this book/perioidical?
Give the person a "materials suggestion form", or  accept the marked catalog, advertisement, etc. Explain that you will give the information to the appropriate selector. (Tom Caswell for Art, Art history and museum studies materialsals; Ann Lindell for architecture and allied disciplines.)  Make sure the person leaves their name and email address, so they can be contacted for further information, and/or be notifed when materials arrive.


LIBRARY CARDS

Are you still accepting the old, (non-Gator-1) library cards?
No.

I do not have my Gator-1 card.  Can I check out  materials? Use the computers?
If the person has a picture ID, you may lookup their gator-1 number for computer access or circulation
purposes.

I am not affiliated with with UF (or, I am an alumni).  How can I check out materials?
You must apply for a Courtesy Borrower's Privileges at  the Marston Science Library circulation desk.

I am not affiliated with with UF (or, I am an alumni). Can I use the computers?
Issue a computer-only access card.  Patron will need a Picture ID to facilitate this process.
 



RETURNS and RENEWALS

 Can I renew these books at another campus library?
Yes (with the exception of the Health Science Center Library).  You may also review books over the Web.

Can I return these books at another campus library?
Yes.  You may also use the overnight book drop.

Do I need my library card to renew books?
Yes.  You can renew at the library using your gator 1 card; or, you may renew on the Web by logging into your account on the UF Libraries Catalog.

How do I log into my account?
You may use your UFID or your 14-digit library barcode number.  Your verificaiton PIN is the month and day of your birthday XXXX.



CIRCULATION and STACKS QUESTIONS

Can you tell me how many books I have checked out and if any are overdue?
Yes (if time allows).    Patrons can now access this information on their own by logging into their account via Library Catalog.

How many books can I check out at one time?
Students/Staff/Courtesy = 100
Grad Students = 250
Faculty = 350

The book I am looking for is not on the shelf. Could you help me to find it?
Check the UF Libraries Catalog to confirm call number, location, status. If at all possible, go with the patron to find the book.  Otherwise, provide map and/or directions. If item still not found, provide "item needed" form.

The Catalog says this book is lost.  I need this book.  What can I do?
This may be a reference question in disguise.   There may be other materials on this subject.If question is item specific, provide an ILL,  item-needed, or material suggestion form.   Consult a Librarian if available.

Can I check out a reference or oversize book?
No. These are room use only.

I need to make a color copy (or scan) of this reference (oversize, etc.) book?  Can you make an exception?
We have an in-house scanner with multiple downloading options and a color printer.  If the person insists they need to take the material from the library, they will need to get special permission from one of the librarians.

Can I check out this room-use-only video?  I need it for a class presentation.
You may be able to take it out for a limited time.  See a librarian for special permission.



PERIODICAL QUESTIONS

Why do these periodicals look like books?
They are bound periodicals.  When an entire volume is received, it is bound together like a book, and shelved in the stacks at its call number.

Where are you old periodicals/magazines/journals?
They can be found in the stacks under their call number. In the UF Libraries Catalog, "browse organized lists" by title  to get the call number.

Where are the periodicals kept?
Most recent are shelved on the west wall, in alphabetical order. Recent, unbound periodicals are located at the circulation desk. Back issues are bound and shelved in the stacks by call number.

How long do periodicals stay at the bindery?
4-8 weeks.



FINES and BILLS

How much is an overdue fine?
25 cents/day, per item, for most materials.
25 cents/hour, per item, for reserve materials.
Recall fines are an additional 25 cents/day, per item.

Do I pay for library fines here?
No.  Pay at Criser Hall.  Student Accounts will send you a bill.

Am I blocked?  (Will I be able to register, get my grades, check out books, etc.?)
The Libraries block circulation privileges when a patron has books 7 days overdue.  In addition, patrons are
blocked when a bill is created for a lost book.  These  blocks affect circulation-related privileges only.
Financial holds, affecting registration, reporting of grades, etc., involve a transaction with Student
Accounts Receivable, Criser Hall.

I was billed fines or lost book charges for  material that I returned.
Have the patron fill out a problem report.



COPY MACHINES

The copy machine ate my card, zapped the money on my card, etc.  How do I get reimbursed?
Fill out a Xerox refund form and leave it in the refund box at the service desk. You should have a response by the end of next business day.

Where can I get a copy card?
There is a vending machine in the copier area.

Do you have photocopiers or printers?
Two b/w photocopiers are located on the main floor near the north end of the stacks area.
Two laser printers (color and b/w) are located near the desk at the computer cluster.  All public workstations print to these printers.

What is the cost for copies and laserprints?
standard photopcopy..........13 cents
11 x 17 photocopy..............26 cents
b/w laser print................... 13 cents
color laser print..................$1.00

Do you have change for a $5.00 bill?
AFA does not make change. The photocopy machines and printers do not take or make change.  Photocopiers and printers require the use  of copy cards.
