Endowments

Endowments provide permanent income in support of the work of the libraries and provide a steady annual flow of financial support, which is essential to collection building. The principal of the endowment remains untouched while only the earned income from the endowment is used to make purchases. An endowment can be named in honor of or in memory of a family member, friend or loved one. An endowment benefits students and scholars in perpetuity by providing a lasting legacy.

An endowment can be established within the George A. Smathers Libraries with a donation of $30,000 or more and can be funded over a period of years. Investment results from endowments may be used for general or very specific purposes, depending on the wishes of the donor. Endowment opportunities are plentiful and in virtually every subject matter. Listed below are some of the endowments that currently support programs at the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries:

The Louise Seaman Bechtel Visiting Professorship is designed to allow qualified children's librarians to spend a month reading and studying at the Baldwin Library within the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida. The Baldwin Library contains a special collection of more than 95,000 volumes of children's literature published from the 1670s to the present. The fellowship is endowed in memory of Louise Seaman Bechtel and Ruth M. Baldwin and provides a stipend of $4,000 to support up to three annual visiting professorship awards. In addition to the professorship, a second endowment, the Louise Seaman Bechtel Endowment, promotes the Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature through the acquisition of research materials to complement the library.

The C. Farris & Julia B. Bryant Florida History Preservation Fund assists the University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries by providing the funding needed for the library digitization project entitled "Great Floridians Political Papers Project for the New Century". The income generated by this endowment advances the efforts of the Digital Library Center and the preservation of political papers.

The Herbert Russell Gaylord Endowment furthers the George A. Smathers Libraries' goals by generating income to meet the libraries' greatest needs. Most recently the funds generated from this endowment have been utilized in an ongoing Cuban project, the Notary Protocols. The libraries are working to preserve and make accessible a veritable gold mine of rare historic documents in Cuba's National Archives that chronicle three centuries of Spain's colonization of the New World.

The Dr. Madelyn M. Lockhart Book Fund in African Studies was the first book endowment established to support the Center for African Studies. The fund helps to develop the growing Africana collection by providing income to purchase books, manuscripts, photographs, videos, rare books or historic maps.

The Ted Fearney Book Endowment in Architectural Studies complements the Ted Fearney Endowed Professorship in Architecture Fund, which is housed in the College of Design, Construction and Planning. The book endowment provides the funds needed for the faculty member in the endowed professorship to acquire research materials such as books, journals and microfilm. Barbara Fearney established the endowment in memory of her late husband, Edward M. (Ted) Fearney, a professor of architecture and design at the University of Florida for 35 years.
