Periodical Improvement Group (PIG)

W/ Library Binding Committee

10:100-10:15 Thursday, January 16th, 2003

Present: Doug Kiker, Robert Parker, Judy Rummel, Daniel Holt, Kendra Carter, Jason Fleming

Unit binding representatives were unable to attend this meeting

Some discussion of the conversion process and how it will affect check in.

Three different ways proposed

  1. check in temporarily on the DHLD holding screens
  2. keep checking in as normal, and convert over by hand at some point in the future.
  3. Have everything printed out and type it in to aleph by hand.

On problem is we don’t know how NOTIS fields will convert to aleph. We are waiting for a test load to go through to evaluate.

Preservation is planning a mass binding <shudder> project during April and May.

An outside person will come in and set up shop in preservation. They will be pulling titles from the following units.

  1. Library West
  2. Education*
  3. Latin American Collection
  4. AFA*

Bobby will do Quality control on the items as they go out and the individual units will do Quality control as the items come back in.

They have a goal of 200 items per week.  The attempt is to get as many items done before NOTIS goes offline.

The Binding contract was set to expire, but we applied for a Hardship extension, and we now have until February 2004 with this contract.

Speculation as to if the MAY 12 STP date will be pushed back.

Resource Services is meeting next Tuesday maybe they will have Aleph updates for us then.

Cathy Mook is in a meeting today where updates might be given as well.

There will be another meeting next week for the Binding people who were unable to come today. One person from serials will attend to represent the department.
